   Do you like telling stories? Do you like listening to stories? Come to the library to meet    new people and share stories during a cosy session animated by the Storytellers Guild ACT. You are welcome to bring a memory object if you wish to tell your story.

Our storytellers will be part of a great day out for the whole family!

KIDSCAPE is an exciting free event for KIDS! Full of diverse, fun and creative activities ranging from parkour workshops, a mountain biking skills track, enchanting story-telling, nature play, with mud and sand, sticks and stones, hay bales, shipping ropes, cardboard, urban farming, drawing, writing and much more!

KIDSCAPE is a public event undertaken by The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) as part of the 2016 International Festival of Landscape Architecture. The event has been created in collaboration with the ACT Government, the National Capital Authority and In The City Canberra to encourage kids to speak out about their future city.  

AILA is committed to advocating for the role of children in the design of our cities and KIDSCAPE will provide the kids of Canberra with activities that will inspire, excite, generate imagination and encourage them to ask questions that start conversations focused on urban design, living in an urban environment and how they see the future of their city unfolding.

KIDSCAPE is a free event and accessible to all Canberrans, open from 10:00am - 4:00pm.  Check out WHAT'S ON and make sure you register if you are interested in attending one of the activities!

Puppets and the Storyteller with Patsy Allan 

 An interactive workshop for early childhood educators, librarians and parents and anyone who would like to use puppets to engage their listeners in stories, rhymes and songs. Patsy uses puppets to enhance the story or song not to perform puppet shows.

Participants of this workshop can expect to: 

1.  Be introduced to the possibilities of puppets as a tool to enrich and enliven a story performance 
2. Observe puppet/teller interaction in the performance of the story
3. Develop a puppet’s personality and voice that conveys what the teller wants the audience to know about the puppet 
4. Practice basic hand movements to give lifelike movement to the puppet 
5. Discuss what stories might have puppet possibilities 
6. Become aware of online and print resources available on the topic of storytelling with puppets. 
7. Become aware of difference between ‘Puppetelling' and putting on a puppet show, especially when advertising a story session 
8.  Be given the opportunity to practice with puppets and take away at least one story or song to use in the following week.

Canberra & Region Heritage Festival April 2016

Storyteller Cherie Burns will perform as part of the Tell Your Story event at The Woolshed, Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary on Saturday 9 April, from 10am – 12:00pm

Become a part of your local history and share your stories about the beautiful Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary. Join a professional storyteller and an oral historian for a great morning of storytelling and sausage sizzling in unbeatable surrounds. Inspirational fun for kids and adults alike.

Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is a unique project designed to rehabilitate an important section of endangered Box-Gum Grassy Woodland, of which there is less than 1% remaining in Australia. The project has reintroduced several birds and animals into the woodland including Bettongs and Brown Tree Creepers.

The Conservation Council is recording stories about the history of Mulligans Flat and we would love to hear about your current and past experiences in the woodland and living next to nature. Bring the family and watch their faces light up as they lose themselves in the mesmerizing storytelling and delicious sausages.

Looking for something to do with family or friends on the weekend? Come along to the CONNECT AND PARTICIPATE EXPO! Saturday 28 March, 11am – 4pm at the Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston. We will be there to promote Storytelling and are planning to perform stories on the demonstration stage in the afternoon. Come to our stall and share a story to receive a lollipop - or find out about becoming a performance storyteller.

Entry is free, and the EXPO will provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to discover the wide range of groups in Canberra including sport, outdoor recreation, art/craft, music, animal groups, performing arts, special interest and hobby groups. There will be a variety of food stalls at the EXPO, and a free ACTION bus will run a loop every 20 – 30 minutes from Platform 10 on Northbourne Avenue (CIVIC) to the Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston, between 11am to 4pm. Room in June 2013

On Saturday 29 June, 2013 the ACT Storytellers Guild held their annual Room in June evening of stories and music at Curtin Uniting Church Hall.
 

Approximately 50 guests attended, warmed and mellowed by Tom's aromatic mulled wine. At interval guests were treated to a buffet of a wide selection of yummy treats provided by the Guild Committee.  
 

The program this year included short stories from the Canberra centenary celebration storytelling program held in Commonwealth Park in March this year, giving the audience a glimpse of yesteryear from Canberra's beginnings, through to the recent Canberra fires. Entertaining, moving and informative stories were delivered by Mollie, Elizabeth, Vonny, Cherie, Rose and Mary. 
 

After supper the audience was entertained by Brian's somewhat disturbing traditional Inuit Story; Cherie's at times unsettling (the vivid description of his bride) English Folk  Tale about the marriage of Sir Gawain; Eric's clever "play" from The Sentimental Bloke; and Ros's account of the challenges of a "wild child" aunt. Ros finished the evening's program with an audience-participation performance about The Raiders humble beginnings to their development into a not-so-humble winning machine.  
 

A special thank you to The McGurgans, whose music contributed significantly to the night's entertainment and rounded out the evening beautifully.

Storytelling during Canberra's Centenary birthday celebrations

10 tellers told to nearly 500 children and their parents on Monday 11 March in Commonwealth Park. This was a huge day for Canberrans as we celebrated our 100th birthday. Each teller told a short story from a different decade in the last 100 years. Our listeners heard tales about things such as the Yarralumlah brick works, the feeling in Canberra the year the Raiders won the cup, experiences of post WW11 immigrants and about some of our illustrious citizens. Each child had a passport which was stamped as they went from teller to teller. Feedback from several happy parents was that this was the best event of the day. It certainly kept many, many children entertained and was an extremely safisfying experience for the tellers. Thank you to ACT Government for giving us a grant so that we could be part of this special day.
